How do I get Started Blowing Glass Pipes?

Does it take a really long time to get decent at it? Do i have to apprentice somewhere?

1. ehh....too easy.
2. Check out this book: "Creative Glass Blowing" by James E. Hammesfahr. Buy it used online. This is a good start but no substitute for a mentor.
3. I'd suggest taking some classes in Borosilicate Torchworking/Flameworking. Borosilicate glass is like Pyrex, it is tougher than other glasses and won't crack easily. It is not all that difficult to learn, but there are many hobby pipe makers out there. Don't expect to make much money from it. Classes are offerred in many places, check with your local university or community college. Apprenticeships in glass are very, very rare in the USA.
