Why is smoking a pipe not as popular as in the past?

How come more people don't take the time to sit back and enjoy some find pipe tobacco in a nice briar pipe? Pipe smoking used to be very popular among all age groups. Now a days it seems people just want a quick hit, and smoke cigarettes. In my opinion, people should take the time and relax, and start smoking a pipe.

1. Maybe because smoking a pipe isn't as "cool" as smoking cigarettes....yeah right. Pipes are for intellectuals, cigarettes are for losers.
2. People around my age who smoke would be totally embarrased smoking a pipe - even I sometimes get slagged by my friends when I smoke a panatella and they're all sitting with cigarettes... I guess a pipe is associated with "old men" and a cigarette is "cool".
3. You answered your own question. Most don't want to take the time it requires to load and properly maintain a pipe.

I agree it's a shame- I am a pipe smoker and like the odd cigar too...I find pipes very relaxing and although it initially takes time to learn how to pack and maintain a pipe it is WELL worth it...they taste and smell so much better than cigarettes and are much less damaging to lungs (although i concede there are other cancers which are more prevalent in pipe smokers than in non).... I think recently there has been a bit of a backlash against the overly P.C. anti-everything-fun society in which we live and more folk (especially young men) are taking up the pipe- I hope this trend continues and more people find out the pleasure to be derived from it...more pipe smokers=less stress=better world to live in
5. Cigarettes are more convenient to smoke on the go, easier to dispose. With our crazy, high speed lifestyle cigarettes fit better then pipes. Pipes are for long, slow, uninterrupted smoke and used mostly indoors. People still smoke from pipes a lot, you just have to invade their homes to find it out;) Also, as you mentioned, wooden pipe is a great way to give your smoke a nice natural wooden flavor. But if you want to just enjoy the pure taste, and not only when it comes to tobacco but also when you smoke any of popular legal herbs/herbal mixes, I would only recommend to use Glass Pipes.
