What are the purposes of different kinds of smoking pipes?

I know there are all kinds of pipes out there...the straight ones, long ones, calabash, churchwarden, bent, full bent, etc, etc. Why are there so many kinds? What are the benefits of them and why do some people prefer one over the other. I want to buy a pipe or two so my friends and I can casually smoke some tobacco outside when they come over, which ones should I buy and why? Thanks for the help! :) everyone seems to be misunderstanding. This is a tabacco pipe question, hence the "calabash, churchwarden, bent, full bent..." I was wondering what the differences of those pipes were, NOT marijuana pipes.

2. if you're gonna smoke outside, don't buy it at a head shop, unless you don't mind getting the attention of the police... beyond that, the reason for such a variety is simply a variety of preferences...

5. Pipes are considered peraphenalia, unless you have pipe tobacco on you when you have the pipe on you, and nothing but the tobacco inside the pipe. They can run tests that will tell them exactly what is in there. Of course you also have to be 18 to purchase the pipe, and the tobacco.
