Can you get herpes on your lips from sharing smoking pipes?

- It's possible if the person you're sharing the pipe with had a cold sore at the time. Cold sores are caused by oral herpes and they are contagious during an out break, but the chances of getting them through sharing an object is very low. Herpes doesn't last for long periods of time when it's on objects or out side of the body. It would have to go from some ones mouth with cold sores directly with in seconds to your mouth for you to have any chance of that happening. Herpes prefers direct skin contact with an open sore or blister caused by herpes to be passed on. You would have a better chance of getting oral herpes if you kissed some one on the mouth that had a cold sore at the time you kissed them.
