- Well, prices for pipes in specialty stores are generally jacked up, so just ask around for a recommendation. That said, there are different types of pipes, generally you find glass, wooden, metal, and corncob ones. Glass ones are nice and their transparency lets you see how dirty they are on the inside, but you have to be careful with exposing them to extreme temperatures. Wooden ones are pretty swell and usually very durable, but you do need to care for them carefully to keep them in good condition. Metal ones have the advantage of being easy to clean and modify, though you might get a funny taste out of it. Corncob ones give off a taste exactly like how you imagine a burning corncob would, but they are cheap as all hell. Generally, I'd recommend a corncob or metal one if you're starting to smoke (be it pipe tobacco or, uhh, tobacco-like products) since their generally low price range will let you discard them easier if you don't like it/need to.
- Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. I don't typically pay more than $80 for a briar pipe. But I have some cheap $30 pipes that I smoke when riding my horse, that smoke just fine. I can tell the difference though between a pipe that costs more. You get a better grain, and briar that does not have pits.
- Hello there, There is a world of difference in pipes. Various styles and shapes effect the way it smokes. So you want to match the shape of the pipe to fit the style tobacco you smoke. You may have heard someone say this is a good flake pipe. If you smoke flake tobacco, you probably want a bowl with a taller and narrower chamber than a pipe for aromatics. Pipe prices vary greatly. Two primary factors in the price. The quality of the briar and the stem. The craftsmanship of the carving. The better the briar, the more expensive it is. Probably a no brainer there. The other part of the price, craftsmanship. A Mercedes is better made than a VW. That explains part of the price difference. The same with pipes. You also factor in the difference between hand made and machine made. The creative artist factor of the hand carved pipe. Some carvers turn out more appealing designs than others. I would like to say that all $450 pipes smoke better than any $250 pipe. And all $150 pipes some better than any $50 pipe. However, I have found that is not the case. I have some $250 pipes that smoke as well as the $450 pipes. And, I have $150 pipes that smoke no better than most $50 pipes. However, generally you get what you pay for. What else would you like to know? Later,
